Techniques for Decorative Paint Finishes

Decorative finishes improves the texture, style and creativeness to any home. Different techniques are used by professional decorators to give beauty to living space.

For any type of decorative finish, the process includes first putting an opaque base coat with an eggshell or satin sheen and then by layers of another color applied in a diluted like a wash. This is done because flat paint is porous, it will not work well for a base coat for decorative painting, but it can be used like a topcoat.

Either latex or solvent-based paint may be used, but only one type should be used. Latex provides the advantage of getting cleaned easily. But, alkyd paints will slow drying time which needs more time to work the decoration before it gets hardened.

Three types of popular finish techniques are:

• Sponging: Sponging is a faux painting effect which must be done by applying one solid color to the wall and then sponging another color over it. Sponge painting is based on how wet the sponge becomes with paint, what kinds of sponges are used, and how well paint blends together. Sponge painting provides very beautiful effect even it is hard to apply.
• Rag Rolling: Ragging and rag rolling are two decorative painting techniques that can be painted at home as it is simple. If there are minor imperfections in walls in their color or texture this technique will be a great idea. It can instantly provide beautiful results and moreover easy to accomplish.
• Stenciling: Stencils are a traditional home paint finish, and cheapest method to border or pattern a wall or build up interest to a unique pattern.
