Dental nerve blocks are anesthetics that are used to block the nerves during dental surgeries to reduce the sensitivity to pain.
During any dental surgery where anesthesia is necessary, anesthesiologist gives the anesthesia to block the dental nerves on the particular site. While performing this, the amount of anesthesia given depends on the type of anesthesia used, length of surgery and patients health conditions.
Types of dental nerve blocks
- Inferior alveolar nerve block: Inferior alveolar nerve block anesthetizes the teeth on the lower jaw. It anesthetizes the area of mandibular teeth and inferior portions of ramus. The contraindications for this nerve block is infection at the site of injection. It is not suitable for mentally retarded candidates.
- Mental nerve block: This anesthetizes the lower lip and the skin on the chin. It does not anesthetize teeth. It is a branch of alveolar nerve block. Topical or local anesthetics are used to block mental nerves.
- Lingual nerve block: It is also a branch of alveolar nerve block. It is used to anesthetize the tongue.
- Buccal nerve block: It anesthetizes the soft tissue and peristorium buccal to the mandibular molars. It has high success rate.
- Infra orbital nerve block: This anesthetizes the facial nerves. It is used in the treatment of facial deformities. Infection at the site of injection takes place. Local anesthetics are used to anesthetize infra orbital nerves.
- Maxillary nerve block: This anesthetizes the maxillary teeth and their soft tissue. It is used to numb the small area. This anesthetizes the skin of the upper lip and cheek.
