Know the Types of Wheel Drives and Their Advantages and Disadvantages

It is the wheel drive system through which engine drives all the four wheels of the vehicle. There are different wheel drives and all of them have advantages and disadvantages.

Types of wheel drives:

  1. Front-wheel drive
  2. Rear-wheel drive
  3. All or four-wheel drive

1. Front-wheel drive:
It is the most commonly used layout for driving. This is a transmission system that provides the power to the front wheel of the vehicle.

  • Advantages:
    • The cars with front-wheel have the more trunk room and interior space
    • Front-wheel vehicles improves mileage
    • These wheels give good traction in wet weather conditions
    • This comes with lighter weight
    • It is cost effective
    • It allows to use the left boot tracking as a technique of driving
  • Disadvantages:
    • With higher torque engines it is difficult on the front-wheel
    • There is a traction disadvantage in some towing situations
    • Deliver is not much efficient than the rare-wheel
    • Repairs are time consuming in front-wheel

2. Rare-wheel drive:
This is a transmission system which provides the power to the rear wheel.

  • Advantages:
    • The mechanical complexity is less in rare-wheel drive
    • In power cars there is better steering feel and controllable wheels
    • It spreads the over all load of the car to all the four wheels equally
    • Better load balance, acceleration, better stopping, no torque steer, ultimate ability
  • Disadvantages:
    • Interior space is less than the rare-wheel drive
    • Weight of the wheel is more
    • It is comfortable to only few people
    • The price of rear-wheel is high
    • It is difficult to handle on the surfaces which are having low grip and slippery
    • Difficult to drive on snow and rain conditions

3. All or four wheel drive:
The transmission system provides the power to all the four wheels.

  • Advantages:
    • Four-wheel drive combines the advantages of front and rare wheel drives along with the performance
    • It has the off-road capability
    • Weight can be distributed evenly
    • Traction controllable
    • This is entirely automatic and best choice for the changing weather conditions
    • Handling an tire grip are improved
  • Disadvantages:
    • The weight is more as it is having all the four wheels driven
    • Not suitable for hard-core roads
    • Acceleration performance is high
    • It has the capacity of hill-climbing
    • Able to drive on snow weather conditions

Choose the wheel drive that best suits you and your car conditions and opt for the right wheel drive that will keep your journey safe.
