Tooth enamel is the thin outer layer which is covering the tooth. This layer is the hardest tissue in the human body. Enamel is visible outside of the gums and is part of the tooth.
Through enamel you can see light because it is translucent. But the main part of the tooth, the dentin, is the part that’s responsible for your tooth color such as — whether white, off white, Grey, or yellowish.
The color of the enamel can be due to taking beverages like coffee, tea, cola, red wine, fruit juices, and cigarettes. Or these items stain the enamel on your teeth. Regular cleaning and polishing can help remove most of the surface stains on your teeth.
Enamel protect your teeth from daily activities such as chewing, biting, crunching, and grinding. Although the enamel is a hard protector of teeth, it can chip and crack. Enamel also insulates the teeth from potentially painful temperatures and chemicals.
Once a tooth chips or breaks, the damage done is forever. Because enamel has no living cells, the body cannot repair chipped or cracked enamel.
